“You’re going to get caught,” Gary thought to himself as he pulled his hood up and turned down the dark alley. “This isn’t worth going to jail over,” the voice in his head continued as he walked toward the back door of a nondescript building beside the garbage bin. “You’re better than this, and you don’t want to support shady businesses,” his conscience scolded, but it was no use. He didn’t care how wrong it was; he needed his fix.
He climbed the stairs to the second floor, knocked twice, paused, and then knocked once more. A window in the door opened, revealing an orc in a large toque blanche who peeked through, smiling broadly. “Gary! The usual, I assume?”
Gary returned a forced smile. It was concerning how much of a regular he had become, but he couldn’t help himself. “Yes, please. A dozen.” “You’re in luck! The buns came out extra sticky this time,” the orc baker said with a wink.
A rush of excitement, quickly followed by self-loathing, washed over Gary as his smile widened and saliva filled his mouth. “Maybe make it two dozen.”
